MARQUISE
A twisted apartment block at the waterfront
The Marquise stands proudly with its feet in the water, embodying a seamless connection between nature and urban life. Positioned at the highest point of its location, the building serves as a symbolic link between Purmerend’s city center and the Kop West area, while marking the conclusion of the Weidevenne district. Its bold yet lightweight design complements the iconic Melkweg Bridge over the Noordhollandsch Kanaal, ensuring its prominence on the city’s skyline.
By cleverly ‘rolling up’ the apartments within the city-mandated building envelope, an inviting public square has been created at its heart. This square opens gently to the surrounding streets, facilitating a natural and welcoming transition. The cascading form of the structure not only adds a dynamic aesthetic but also creates terraces with panoramic 360-degree views over the water. These terraces foster a strong connection to the landscape, offering residents a sense of openness and tranquility.
The Marquise’s design harmonizes urban density with human-scaled spaces, making it a landmark of thoughtful architecture. Its integration of public and private realms highlights a commitment to creating livable, vibrant environments.
